Litter Prevention

Knowing more about litter is the first step toward a cleaner city!

So, when was the last time you saw someone litter? It may be hard to remember, but litter just does not appear. It is as the result of careless attitudes and poor waste handling.

Littering is a human behaviour. Sadly, most forms of littering are often viewed by public officials and judges as a victimless crime. Many people pass the responsibility of cleaning up on to others. BUT, every neighborhood bearing this burden can suffer from reduced property values and a perception that it's a dangerous, blighted environment in which to live.

Three reasons why people litter!

There are three reasons why people litter in the first place:

1.     they feel no sense of ownership, even though areas such as parks and walking trails, rivers, sidewalks, and streets are public property.

2.     they believe someone else—a park maintenance person, highway worker, or volunteer with a community group—will pick up after them.

3.     litter is already there.

Seven Sources of litter

Although motorists and pedestrians are groups who litter on a fairly regular basis. there are five more sources that contribute significantly to our litter problem:

  • ·        household trash handling and its placement at the curb for collection

  •          dumpsters used by businesses and institutions

  • ·        loading docks

  • ·        construction and demolition sites

  • ·        trucks with uncovered loads

Litter is blown about by wind and traffic or carried by water. It moves until trapped by a curb, building, or fence. Once litter has accumulated, it invites people to add more.

What YOU can do to make a difference!

Small actions you do can add up to BIG changes that will benefit us all. Resolve to make your waste handling practices better. Litter prevention is less costly and time consuming than litter clean-up. We all have a role in keeping our City a clean and beautiful place to live, work and play!

Undercover Garbage
Put your garbage out on the right day and please keep in mind holidays affect your pick-up by moving it to the next day.

It is now the law ( From May 1 to November 30 of each year) in the city to have your garbage covered or contained in a bin when it is out for collection. By using a container with a tight lid or a net, it keeps the birds and animals from tearing it apart.

Need a garbage schedule or not sure what area you are in? Call the City at 311

Don't let your dumpster go topless...
Dumpsters are big sources of litter if the lid is not kept closed. If your dumpster is full to the point you can not close the lid, you have to get it emptied. You may need more frequent pick-up. Don't let your garbage get blown on to someone else's property.

Truck Care 101
If you use a pick-up truck or any other kind of truck or trailer to haul debris and garbage, you are required, by law, to tarp or net what you are carrying. Your load can be a potential safety hazard if it gets blown out and on to the road. Uncovered loads is a big source of roadside litter.

No Butts about it....
If you smoke outside, please use the ashtray or a portable pocket ashtray. If you are a business, provide cigarette butt receptacles where people gather to smoke and sweep and/or rake the area daily for littered butts . For other tips for businesses check out the link: Cigarette Prevention

Gum is litter too
Yes, that piece of gum you chewed and spit out on the ground has now become litter. And it really sticks around for a long time. No need to swallow it, just put it in a bin or a tissue and bring it home.

Do flyers fly?
Yes they do, and so do plastic bags when they are littered. For businesses, check shopping carts before they go outside and remove any garbage. For residents, flyers in super mailboxes should not be thrown on the ground. Bring them home and recycle them. When care is not taken, these items can be seen nesting in trees and bushes.

Businesses are Neighbors
And as neighbors, businesses need to keep in mind that any uncontained garbage becomes litter that can get blown onto adjoining businesses and residential properties, woods, streams and trails. Daily clean-up of loading docks, garbage bins, dumpsters and parking lots are necessary to prevent litter. Why not do our 2 minute Checklist Click here to view

Can that trash!
Motorists and Pedestrians and Consumers too, all  have a responsibility, they do. Whether driving, walking or shopping, your garbage does not belong on the ground. Simply use the bins provided by businesses and the city, or a car litter bag. If a bin is not available, carry it home as well as let the businesses know they need a litter bin. AND if you see litter on the ground, pick it up!

Stoop and scoop that poop!
It is the law in the City to clean up after your dog. It can be a health hazard to animals and people and can get stuck nice and snug on people's shoes. Some parks and trails have bags available, but to be on the safe side, bring a couple of plastic bags and then place them in a bin or bring it home.

Graffiti Hurts
This is vandalism and should be reported to the police and to the City( call  311). If you are getting hit with graffiti, you need to remove it as quickly as possible, otherwise it sends a signal that it is ok to deface your property. For excellent tips on how to curb and eliminate graffiti, go to the Graffiti Hurts website www.graffitihurts.org
